Fighting Irish of the Spanish Main

Monday, May 24th, 2010

I used to do a bit of comic-stripping in my youth. Here’s a panel I drew from “Fighting Irish of the Spanish Main,” which, despite its title, was a gigantic and ambitious sci-fi epic, but it only ran for six months or so, barely enough time to establish the primary character, that blonde lady in the middle, Jadah Scratch. Click on the above panel to see a larger version.

Travelling Shoes: Yosemite

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The glacial morane of Yosemite is a place of staggering beauty, and brings out the hidden Ansel Adams in all of us. Alas, I only have my pocket Canon L15, which doesn’t even have spot metering, and so I’m only able to take a few snapshots and hope they look OK.

Poke Bento

Poke Bento

Here’s my lunch today, a poke bento whipped up by Ninja Sushi in Kailua. (Thanks for the snapshot, Mutt!) I’m not sure there’s anything better. It was all gone a few minutes later.

This is also an illustration of cultural missed cues. After joining the FaceBook family, I was puzzled by a kind of game played between FB friends in which they “poke” each other. I thought they were sharing recipes, but no, Hawaiian poke — pronounced “po-keh” — is a delicacy of bite-sized chunks of raw, fresh fish marinated with seaweed and kukui nut relish, plus seasonings of herbs, spices, nuts, marinades, fruits, vegetables and seasonings, whatever the cook dreams up. In Hawaiian, poke roughly translates to “bite-sized.”

In FaceBook land, poke — single syllable — means to nudge or jab or signal for attention. It might even be a chaste kind of cyber-sex. There are all sorts of little games and gamesmanship on FaceBook, but poke-poke seems to be the most popular. It’s kind of cute.

Consider yourself poked.

Cece’s Cats Cycle!

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

catcycleFrom Bob in Idaho comes this charming comic strip from his friend Cece. Click on the drawing for bigger versions.

“Cece is 13, her mom is Nez Perce and Makah and her dad is Mexican,” reports Bob. “She lives on the Nez Perce reservation with her grandma and grandpa.  She plays basketball, track and volleyball, at Lapwai Middle School and is in 7th grade.  She loves cats and dogs, likes to draw, she wants to pow wow dance, but doesn’t right now. She is a very good student.”
