Home Repair: Cutting the Rug

Written by Burl on July 20th, 2010

Carpet bombing.

Edge details

For the first time in our lives, we actually chose and ordered new carpeting based on what we wanted, instead of choosing the least objectionable from the remainders rack. Guess what? When you do it that way, it’s way more expensive and you have to wait for a couple of months before it arrives. But arrive it finally did, and thanks to carpet-laying whiz Randy (of Randy’s Carpets, naturally), it’s down. Finally. The above snapshot was taken before we started cluttering the room with furniture. That’s daughter Kate watching TV (“Doctor Who,” naturally) and I didn’t notice at first, but every animal in the house is here checking out the carpet — cats Roo and Lucy, dogs Maizie and Andy. The smaller snapshot shows the edging treatment, with floor tile and decorative tile bordering the room.

Which is the true color of your carpet? The one in the larger photo or the one in the smaller photo? Two different shades of green!

Odd cut to the carpet, too. What was wrong with a rectangular cut?

I like your decorative tile, which makes it interesting.

Why don’t you show us the room with the finished arrangement of furniture? Just curious.

Is there tile under the carpet or is there just the bare concrete with pad?

This room is really odd, well, diffierent, to say the least. No tile on the left side of the room, huh?

    LOL.

I guess the reason I find the room a bit odd is that it is not symmetrical, i.e., the title does not surround the carpet (on the left side) and even the lamp doesn’t hang in the center of the room.

I want to go there and rearrange stuff. LOL.

There’s an opening to a bed room on the left, thats why the edging isn’t there. Over on the right, it’s the dining area and door to the outside, a high-traffic area. That’s why the carpet meets in a swooping S-shape. It’s actually all quite balanced and feng-shui’d, it’s just not equally weighted.
One picture was taken in daylight, the other in artificial light. The actual color is somewhere in between.

Looks awesome, Burl. You’ve been working on this for years, and it shows in the details. I like it!! So do your critters!!
