Friday Funnies: Gang of Four

Written by Burl on July 16th, 2010

This is a political cartoon that originally ran in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 1981. The editor discouraged signing non-Corky cartoons, and so I was just using my little raincloud hieroglyph at the time. The “Gang of Four” had just been sentenced by Chinese authorities for the excesses of the Cultural Revolution, pretty much because they were allied with Mao and later plotted a coup. Left to right, they’re Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, Jiang Qing — Mao’s last wife — and Wang Hongwen. Originally given death or life sentences, they were all later released from prison. They’ve all gone west.
