Times Home Cooking, 1978

Written by Burl on May 26th, 2010

One of my first advertising jobs was knocking out quickie comic strips for Times Supermarket Wednesday print ads. The turnaround was pretty quick, usually just a few hours just before deadline when the space was settled on in the coupon layout. The campaign was to influence more “home” cooking. This was often fun, as the strips usually were parodies of classic comic strips. This was the first one, however, and fairly realistic, almost a storyboard approach to a TV ad. Yea. “In The Bleachers” has always looked. uh. scarey to me too. although I stopped saying that years ago and now use the teenage and up substitute; “frightening”.

I happen to know that at about this point in history, Times’ ad agency also contemplated a TV ad where a housewife said she likes to cook great meals for the old man with food bought at Times. At the end she holds up a large carrot and says, “My husband gives me big bonuses!” The agency dude really wanted this script, but sanity prevailed. Barely. Talk about your “Mad Men.”

  6. Primo Kimo says:

sanity AND logic prevailed. That statement isn’t much of a double entendre. It didn’t make sense.

  7. Burl says:

That ad agency was FoBreGaSa, and I worked there for a few months and it seemed like years.

  11. Burl says:

Left-handed because … uh … left-handed ladies are hot. You oughtta know.

What? You worked at FoBreGaSa, too? That was my first job in Hawaii when the Star-Bull and Tiser wouldn’t hire me due to lack of experience. I was there in 1977, before I begged Gannett to send me to Pacific Daily News in Guam to escape Pedro. Oh, the stories.
